Youth Activities
Here at the garden we run two clubs for youngsters interested in learning about nature, wildlife and the environment in general.
The first group called the Nature Club has been running very successfully for many years. This is for children aged 8-13 and the second group called Countryside Club is for youngsters aged 13-17.
Unlike most youth clubs or groups our theme for the sessions is all about connecting with the environment by growing food, hands on activities, cooking, arts and crafts and some really fun and different trips around the North East.
These are just a taster of some of the things that we did last year:
- Camping trips, camp fires and night games.
- Horse riding lessons and stable management.
- Learing to fish and cooking trout.
- Visiting various farms and learning about where our food comes from and the different types of farms there are.
- Playing in outdoor parks.
- gardening, weeding, planting crops, fruit picking and willow weaving.
- making bird boxes, feeders and bird cakes.
- pond dipping, mini beast hunts.
- cooking, using our own food where possible, and making jams, pasties, pizzas, soups, jacket potatoes, cakes and biscuits.
- Arts, painting and mosaic tiling.
Nature Club normally runs on Saturdays between 10am-1pm. We provide lunch usually cooked by the group.
Countryside Club runs on a Thursday evening straight after school until 5.30pm. Snacks are provided.
Both clubs are free to join, and before joining, a registration form must be filled in by parents/guardians.
Mark runs both clubs and is always looking for volunteers (aged 16 years and over) to help run the Nature Club and Countryside Club. So if you would like some experience of working with young people in a natural environment, please contact Mark. All volunteers are encouraged to pass on their expertise to the group, whether it is cookery, wildlife or gardening etc.
We will provide appropriate training and organise CRB checks. if you are aged between 16 and 25, we will also support you to gain a nationally recognised V accreditation for time spent volunteering.
